Dell Wyse at Citrix Synergy
|
This week is dominated by the yearly Citrix Synergy that is holding place in Los Angelas. Of course, one of the biggest sponsors is as every year Dell Wyse.
Dell Wyse has quite a big booth at the show and used this space and several good sessions, to present all the latest and greatest they have or will have in the near future.
Things to mention from the show are for sure the release of WE8S (no, this is not a typo). WE8S stands for Windows Embedded 8 Standard. With this release Dell Wyse is the first to market with the new Microsoft Embedded OS. Features like multi-touch, modern UI and gestures and access to Windows 8 apps offer the end user an immersive multimedia experience with all the essential tools for workplace productivity. The Windows Embedded 8 Standard-based D class and Z class thin clients come armed with industry-leading remote protocols including Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 with RemoteFX, Citrix Receiver, Dell vWorkspace Connector, and VMware Horizon View Client.
At the moment of release WE8S will be running on the D- and Z-class. As WE8S is a lot bigger than its succedor, it will need a 16GB flash locally. Other great features of this new OS are the new Write Filter, called Unified Write Filter (UWF), support for direct install of the MS hotfixes, the included SCCM support, or brand new scripts to easily sysprep the images. The UWF combines the best from the old Enhanced Write Filter, the current File Based Write Filter with several new features. This will allow you to again commit changes on the fly, exclude not only files and folders but also Registry settings and much more.
Although Windows 8 has currently not the best reputation in the market, this again shows the strong relationship between Dell Wyse and Microsoft and of course, the commitment of Dell Wyse to bring the latest technology to the customers.
Dell Wyse also released the new ThinOS 8 code this week. Along with this new firmware itself, they will release it for the first time on a dual core processor. As already presented on this years Cebit as a tech preview, now it is time to get your hands on the upcoming D10D. With the D10D you will get the fastest OS on a superb hardware. And it is not only the hardware that is brand new to ThinOS. Also a lot of features found their way in the new firmware. Here are some of them:
1. Industry first non-Windows RDP 8 implementation with RemoteFX, TS Gateway, UDP and VOR (H.264 redirection) support.
2. Custom Citrix Receiver 3.x implementation with seamless, HDX 3D Pro, HDX Multi-stream combined with unique QOS per V-Channel.
3. Quest vWS support for Desktop and Applications with vWS 8.0 (no compatibility mode required!)
4. Enhanced wireless support with ability to Scan wireless networks, and save multiple connections into a configurable wireless profile including priority assignment.
5. Imprivata One Sign Server support for Citrix XA+XD & VMware View; providing improved no click access, single sign-on, and strong authentication login.
Last but not least, Dell Wyse is powering one of their big screen at the booth with its Android driven stick which adds smart functions to every TV. Dell made a lot of noise around this USB stick-like device in the last months but not it looks like they are near the finish line.

Project Ophelia brings Android to your TV
|
This week the CES 2013 (Consumer Electronics Show) takes place in Las Vegas. Among many vendor Dell Wyse is one of them. And beside a lot of already well known thin clients, cloud clients or software, Dell Wyse announced a new project called Ophelia.
Ophelia is an Android based USB stick that can be plugged into nearly every TV. The only things your TV has to have is a USB and a HDMI port. If you already have one of the new MHL, or Mobile High-Definition Link, then you can use only this one as Ophelia gets its power normally via USB and in the latter case MHL support USB over HDMI.

From that point of view Ophelia does not bring anything really new. You can use your Google Apps, play some games and connect to your infrastructure via RDP. So, assuming you are on the road and do not want to carry your laptop with you, then you can simply plug in this stick to your eg. hotel TV and connect to your server backend to work.
The USB stick is fully manageable via the Cloud Client Manager from Wyse.
The problem, in my opinion, would still be the input device. I haven't seen any touch-enabled TVs in any hotel room I have ever stayed. Maybe I am living not in the best hotels but I don't think this is a standard or will be soon. Therefore you will need a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Any carrying this around plus the USB stick sums up to nearly the sme weight. OK, you can say now that a laptop is not that secure and if you loose this is more risky and more expensive. True, of course. But if this is your concern, then you can switch to the Dell Wyse X-class laptop style thin client. This one is cheap, has no data locally to loose, has an inbuild keyboard and touchpad and the ability to connect your backend also.
In my opinion this would be the better choice. But I am curious to see what Dell Wyse comes up with, when this puppy is really available.

Two new hardware plattforms announced
|
This week Dell Wyse (uhh, that still sounds strange to me but it is getting better every day) has announced two new hardware plattforms.
With the new D-class Dell Wyse wants to shorten the gap between the C-class and the high performance Z-class units. Beside that they position this unit directly against the HP t510, which falls really short in a direct comparison. But more on this later.
The new D-class will be equiped with an AMD dual core processor running at 1.4GHz. With up 4GB DDR3-1066MHz of RAM, up to 8 GB flash, one DVI-I, one Displayport, 10/100/1000 Mbit/s network card, optional Fiber NIC, wireless or bluetooth module, composite audio and 4 USB 2.0 port, the unit is really well loaded. You can get this one preinstalled with the Wyse enhanced SUSE Linux (D50D), WES 2009 (D90DW) or WES 7 (D90D7). Also a unit without any OS (D00D) for use with Wyse WSM or any other provisioning software is available.
When it comes to a benchmark comparison the HP does not look very good. I did some test here in my lab and it looks like the D-class has an approximately 40% faster CPU and between 40-75% (2D vs 3D) higher graphics performance. And all this with a lower power consumption of only 9 Watt.
The second hardware plattform that was announced is the successor of the VMware View dedicated P20. Dell Wyse has announced not only one but two new upcoming units named P25 and P45.
The P25 comes in a housing that is very similar to the T-class. It is only a little bit bigger but has on Displayport and one DVI-I Port to connect two digital displays at the same time and finally USB 2.0 ports. Along with the new "Tera 2" PCoIP chipset from Teradici this unit is well prepared for demanding, graphics-intensive applications like CAD/CAM or HD multimedia.
The P45 has the same "Tera 2 " PCoIP chipset but can control up to 4 displays through 4 integrated Displayports.
Both units have a 10/100/1000 MBit/s NIC inbuild but can be equipped with a Fiber NIC if needed. WLAN is not possible though.

Off Topic - Nice video about our possible future?
|
Hi,
although I typically do not write about or post topics not dealing with Wyse, this time it is different.
Today I saw a great little 7min video which grabs the Google Glasses hype and extends it to a vision that I am not sure I really want to "see".
But take a look yourself.

Xenith 2 presented at Citrix Synergy in San Francisco
|
Last week the Citrix Synergy took place in San Franciscos Moscone Convention Center. This is the biggest Citrix event with several thousands of attendees and hundreds of exhabitors.
During that event Wyse announced the Xenith 2 client. This brand new client will be based on the T-class hardware with its ARM based System-on-a-chip SoC design running the Wyse Zero Engine.
The video performance is much better than with the first Xenith introduced nearly 2 years ago. You can easily play H.264 or wmv coded videos in fullscreen without any interruption or latency. Even if you rotate one of two possible screen to use a so called L-shape (or Pivot) constellation, the video performance remains the same.
As the Xenith 2 is using the Wyse Zero Engine you still have no published APIs, no well known ports, no

Dells intend to buy Wyse - Part 2
|
Back from skiing and back to business. That was quite a surprising news I got during my absence. The well known PC maker Dell has announced its intend to acquire Wyse. Due to some rumors Dell will buy Wyse for a whopping 1 billion dollar (almost 770 million Euro). That's not bad for a Thin Client vendor. But Dell seems not to only look at the hardware Wyse is selling but more likely they are very interested in the patents and software products like Pocket Cloud, WSM or the Wyse owned Thin OS.
Pretty sure Dell can easily design own Thin Client hardware. But getting the same knownledge and expertise in this computer section isn't that easy. So it was easier to buy Wyse.
According to some internals to whole deal should be finalize in the very near future. So we can assume that everything is done until beginning of summertime.
One nice story around that is, that Dell Germany has just signed a contract with the German Thin Client vendor IGEL. IGEL is the biggest player in the German market but not well known outside the country. Together with Dell IGEL has just celebrated the sale of the one millions Thin Client. Whereas Wyse has already sold more than 20 million clients. Quite interesting what will happen to that contract, now that the Dell mother has bought Wyse. Looks like IGEL is loosing here its just big celebrated partner sooner than they would like.
Maybe I have to think now about renaming this site to FreeDellMonkeys or I just stay with technicalhelp ;-)

New Wyse ThinOS-based client has arrived!
|
Last week Wyse announced the arrival of the Wyse T10 thin client, a new Wyse ThinOS-based product at the Cisco Live tradeshow in London (BTW, I was onsite and checked this first hand). This new product is the latest member of the Wyse T class family of ARM-based system-on-chip (SoC) thin clients, initially introduced last year with the Wyse T50 thin client which is based on Wyse enhanced Linux. This new T10 is a real killer. I had the opportunity to get my hands on one unit upfront and have to say that this unit is by far the best and fastest Wyse ThinOS unit I have ever seen.

Running on a Marvel 1GHz ARM SoC processor and equipped with 4 USB 2.0, one DVI-I, Audio In/Out and an optional built-in wireless B/G interface, this unit is well prepared for all environments. Its version of Wyse ThinOS is specially optimized for the ARM SoC and supports

Introducing New Wyse Z50 and X50M
|
High performance thin client built on enterprise-class SUSE Linux for the most demanding virtual desktop environments
"Wyse Z50 is the ONLY thin client that combines the raw power of a single- or dual-core AMD processor with the enterprise-class SUSE Linux OS to securely deliver high-end multimedia applications with exceptional, uncompromised quality and deliver the best user experience in combination with Citrix HDX, Microsoft RDP 7, VMware View, and PCoIP."
This is what Wyse is promising at least.
But, based on the very robust and easy to use SLED plattform, Wyse has extended its offering of Linux clients. Beside the already available C50LE and R50L, we now have the choice to select three more models.
The Z50S and Z50D are both looking the same, but the S and D suffix indicate a different processor in the unit. The Z50S is driven by an AMD 1.5 GHz single core processor, whereas the Z50D is running with a AMD 1.6GHz dual core one. This makes these two units really fast, which is of couse benefitial for all user who need multimedia applications running.
The third unit is called X50M. This is the first Linux based mobile client Wyse has ever released. Following the success of the WES and WES7 based mobile clients, Wyse has decided to enrich the world with a Linux based one.
Such a mobile device can be used in various spaces like medical care (hospitals), schools, warehouses but also for you people driving or flying around and do not want to loose any data, when the device gets stolen.
