WDM 4.9.1 update

Wyse Device Management

Just a quick warning on the new WDM 4.9.1 release. My first quick tests indicate that this version is only running on english server OS. You should not install it on any international server OS version at the moment. Wyse will give an update on this in the coming weeks.

Other than stated in the release notes, WDM 4.9.1 does install fine on a 32 bit OS, like Windows 2003 or Windows 7.

WDM 4.9.1 released

Wyse Device Management

Besides the new Thin OS firmware, Wyse has also released a new WDM version. It is called WDM 4.9.1 and the main focus in this build is on security.
Wyse has enhanced its attempts to make WDM even more secure than it is today (or yesterday). All HAgents (the WDM agent that resides on the client) have been reworked to enable the new features.

Even during the WDM installation you are now getting several replies if your system is secure or not. If it isn't secure then you get the info on how to make it secure. The main security feature is to check if https is enabled or not. As long as only ftp and http is used for communication and package distribution, the system is not secure. So the hint is, of course, to disable ftp and http and enable only https.
Be aware that disabling ftp means that you are no longer able to push a firmware upgrade to a P20. But this really only affects the P20. All other clients do support http and https as upgrading protocols.

Along with the new WDM version Wyse has also released a cool WDM Security Guide in their knowlegde base. Check it out and do a search for document ID 22428.

Wyse released new HAgent for WES2009 and WES7

Wyse Device Management

Today Wyse has released a new HAgent for their WES2009 and WES7 based units like C-, R-, Z- or X-class. This Hagent version (WES2009 is 5.1.1.59 and WES7 is 6.0.0.32) is fixing some crashing issues when connecting to the WDM server. In detail:
- Crashed occurs while communicating via HTTPS and root CA is pushed to thin client.
- and when DNS SRV records are longer than 25 characters.

You can download the new HAgent directly from the Wyse website for free.

New WDM 4.8 released

Wyse Device Management

During my holiday Wyse has released the new WDM version. It got the version number 4.8 and a rich set of new features. As you know an upgrade from any earlier version is not allowed without proper licensing.

WDM can be upgraded from

• Microsoft Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 64-bit (Standard and Enterprise) – English
• Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit - English

Unfortunately only english operating systems are supported which could be an issue in each non-english country.

The new features are:

After downloading it, extract the archive to your local PC and start the tool there.
The only two additional things you need is

- a master device or an image file
Wyse only supports V-, R- and X-class units (except X90) and Linux V6, Wyse enhanced Suse Linux and Windows XPe as operating systems.
More to come in the next version. Stay tuned.

Tech Docs: Using PXE without IP Helpers

Wyse Device Management
Issue:

Imaging Wyse devices with PXE across WAN or VLAN requires the use of IP helpers and it is not always possible to configure the required network changes on switches or routers.

Fact:

The PXE RFC requires that the boot server receive a DHCP request packet from a client to the boot server. This UDP packet needs to be explicitly forwarded by a router or layer 3 switch to traverse the network. A DHCP relay or IP helper is used to forward the DHCP request to a central DHCP server and PXE boot server.

Details:

Both the boot server and DHCP server are both listening on the same port (UDP 66) for the same packet. The DHCP server replies with an acknowledgement and the PXE boot server will reply with the details of the location of the boot server.

Tech Docs: Installing Wyse Device Manager 4.5.3 with SQL 2005 Express

Wyse Device Management Issue:
Wyse Device Manger (WDM) Workgroup edition comes bundled with the Microsoft Desktop Engine 2000 (MSDE 2000) and many administrators would like the database to be hosted on the newer SQL 2005 Express Edition.

Fact:
WDM 4.5.3 has native support for SQL 2005 and can easily be used with SQL 2005. Older 4.5.x versions may still be used with SQL 2005 however additional installation steps are required.
